Dibs

The story

Why I built Dibs

01The idea

Nobody should have to stand in a line

Cafés, salons and clinics still run their waiting lines on a clipboard or a crowd at the door. You can't step away without losing your place, and the business can't tell who has given up and left.

Dibs swaps the line for a QR code. Scan it, join from your phone, and go wait wherever you like. Dibs tells you when it's your turn.

02The build

From an empty repo to a live queue in three days

The first version went from an empty repo to a working queue in three days: owners, customers, businesses with open hours and time zones, joining and cancelling, ticket numbers that reset every day, and a live dashboard.

Everything runs on Convex, so a new ticket, a called number or a paused queue shows up on every screen the moment it happens, with no refresh.

03The hard part

Reaching a phone without an app

The whole point is that customers don't install anything, so the 'you're up' ping can't come from an app. Web Push works in any browser tab on Android and desktop, but on an iPhone only once the site has been added to the home screen.

So WhatsApp is the fallback. When an owner calls the next ticket, the person at the front gets 'you're up', whoever is three places from the front gets a heads-up, and every attempt on every channel is logged.

04The exception

The side quest with paid plans

Dibs is the one side quest that charges. The free plan runs a real queue at one location, up to 75 tickets a month, with browser notifications.

Pro and Business add the things that cost money to run, like WhatsApp messages, which are paid for one by one, plus more locations, team members and deeper analytics. Billing runs on Razorpay subscriptions with GST invoices.

Under the hood

How it’s built

Realtime everywhere

Convex queries keep the owner's dashboard, staff screens and every customer's ticket in step, with no polling.

Notifications without an app

Web Push with VAPID keys and no third party, falling back to Twilio WhatsApp, with every attempt logged.

Wait times that learn

Estimates follow each business's own average service time, so the number on the ticket gets closer to reality as the day goes on.

Billing built for India

Razorpay subscriptions with trials and webhooks, GST-inclusive prices, CGST/SGST/IGST splits and PDF invoices.
